Satellite Imagery for Farmers: A Simple Guide

Satellite Imagery for Farmers: A Simple Guide

# Satellite Imagery for Farmers: A Simple Guide

Satellites. They sound expensive, complicated, space-age. But here's the truth: they're one of the most practical tools a modern farmer can use. And you don't need a PhD to understand them.

## What Are Satellites Actually Doing?

Every few days, satellites like SkySat and Sentinel-2 orbit over your farm and take pictures. But these aren't regular photos—they capture light your eyes can't see. Specifically, they measure how much red and near-infrared light your crops reflect.

Why does that matter? Healthy plants reflect a lot of near-infrared light. Stressed plants don't. So the satellite can literally see which parts of your field are thriving and which need attention.

## NDVI: The Magic Number

NDVI stands for Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. Fancy name, simple concept.

It's a score from -1 to +1 that tells you how green and healthy your crops are:

- **0.8 to 1.0**: Excellent, dense, healthy vegetation

- **0.5 to 0.8**: Good, normal growth

- **0.2 to 0.5**: Stressed or sparse vegetation

- **Below 0.2**: Bare soil or dead plants

When we show you a satellite image, we color-code it. Green = good. Yellow = watch this. Red = take action now.

## What Can You Actually See?

Satellites are incredible at spotting:

- **Drought stress** (plants start struggling before you can see it from the ground)

- **Irrigation problems** (uneven watering shows up fast)

- **Disease outbreaks** (infected areas have different reflectance)

- **Nutrient deficiencies** (nitrogen-starved crops look different from space)

- **Growth patterns** (see which management zones are performing)

## The Limitations

Satellites aren't perfect. Clouds block them. They can't tell you exactly what's causing the stress (that's where ground sensors help). And they're better at big-picture patterns than individual plant problems.

But as a monitoring tool? Unbeatable. You get a bird's-eye view of your entire operation, every single day, without setting foot in the field.

## How AgriLink Makes This Simple

Here's the thing: raw satellite data is overwhelming. We take care of the complexity:

1. We pull fresh imagery from the best sources

2. Our AI identifies problems automatically

3. You get plain-English alerts: "North field showing early drought stress"

No training required. No complicated software. Just answers.
